Almost every Bluetooth pairing problem is one of about eight failures, and most of them produce symptoms that point somewhere other than the cause. Working through them in order resolves the great majority of cases without a replacement product, and knowing which failure is which prevents the common mistake of resetting the wrong device.
Pairing and connecting are not the same operation
Pairing is a one time negotiation in which two devices exchange and store a shared key. Connecting is what happens afterward, when two already paired devices recognize each other and establish a link using that stored key. Nearly all trouble described as a pairing problem is in fact a connection problem, and the two require different fixes.
A device that will not appear in a phone’s discovery list has a pairing problem. A device that appears in the saved list but never connects, or connects and produces no sound, has a connection problem. Attempting to pair again when the fault is a stale stored key usually fails, because the phone still holds the old record and never enters the pairing exchange at all.
The failure modes in order of likelihood
Something else already has it
This is the most common cause and the least obvious. Earbuds remember several devices, and on power up many of them reconnect to whichever remembered device answers first. A tablet in a drawer, a second phone or a laptop in another room can take the connection silently. The symptom is a product that pairs perfectly one day and refuses the next, with nothing having changed. The check is to switch Bluetooth off on every other device in the home, then power the earbuds on.
The stored key is stale on one side only
If the earbuds are factory reset but the phone still holds the old record, the two now disagree about a key that only one of them has. The phone shows the device, tries to connect and fails, often repeatedly. The fix is to remove the device from the phone’s saved list as well, so both sides start clean. This must be done on every device that has ever paired with the product, not only the one being used.
Only one earbud connects
True wireless earbuds maintain a pairing with each other as well as with the phone, and that inter-bud pairing can be lost independently. The symptom is audio in one ear with the other bud apparently dead or blinking. No amount of work on the phone will fix it, because the fault is between the two buds. The remedy is the manufacturer reset procedure, which usually involves returning both buds to the case, holding the case button for a stated period, and re-pairing from scratch. Procedures differ by model and a substantial number of listings across the catalog do not publish theirs, which is worth checking on a product page before buying.
The device memory is full
Many earbuds store a limited number of paired devices, often between five and eight, and evict the oldest without notice when the limit is reached. A product that suddenly refuses a laptop it used for a year is usually reporting that the laptop was pushed out by newer entries. Resetting the earbuds clears the list and resolves it, at the cost of re-pairing everything.
It never entered pairing mode
Pairing mode is entered differently on nearly every product. Some enter it automatically the first time out of the box and never again without a deliberate action. Some require the buds to be in the case with the lid open while a button is held. Some require a long press from a fully powered off state. The TOZO T10 and the TOZO T12 are examples of case based designs where the procedure is not obvious from the hardware, and the same applies to the JLab JBuds Mini and the JLab Go Air Pop. An indicator light that is on is not necessarily an indicator light that means discoverable.
Connected, but no sound
Two separate causes produce this. The first is output routing: the phone or computer is connected to the headphone but is sending audio somewhere else, which is common after a call ends or a screen is cast. The second is profile selection, which is largely a computer problem. Windows presents a Bluetooth headset as two devices, a stereo output for listening and a hands free device that enables the microphone at much lower quality. Selecting the hands free entry for music produces audio that sounds like a telephone call, and selecting the stereo entry for a meeting leaves the microphone unavailable.
Battery and contacts
Low battery causes intermittent connection long before it causes shutdown, and a charging case with dirty or misaligned contacts can leave one bud permanently uncharged while the case reports itself as full. A bud that never joins its partner and never appears to charge is usually a contact cleaning job rather than a fault. This is worth eliminating before any reset, since a reset performed on a bud with a nearly empty cell tends to fail halfway and leave the pair in a worse state.
Ecosystem features getting in the way
Automatic device switching, which moves a connection between a phone, tablet and computer from the same manufacturer, is helpful when the intention matches and looks like a fault when it does not. On the AirPods 4, the Beats Flex and the Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro, this behavior is configurable in system settings and switching it off makes connection behavior predictable again. Multipoint products such as the Jabra Evolve2 and the Soundcore Q20i have a related issue, where adding a third host silently evicts one of the two active slots.
A sequence that resolves most cases
Charge both earbuds and the case fully, and clean the charging contacts with a dry cloth. Switch Bluetooth off on every device in the home except the one being paired. Remove the product from the saved device list on every device that has ever connected to it. Perform the manufacturer reset procedure for the specific model, since generic instructions frequently do not apply. Then pair once, from a single device, with nothing else competing.
If the product still fails after that sequence, the remaining causes are hardware: a failed cell in one bud, a damaged charging contact, or water ingress. Voice assistant integration adds one more variable, as with the Amazon Echo Buds, where setup runs through an application rather than the system Bluetooth menu and the two paths can disagree about what is paired.
When comparing candidates, a published reset procedure and an actively maintained companion app are worth more than most specification numbers, since they determine whether a problem is fixable at all. Products across the earbud headphones section and the wireless earbuds section vary widely on that point, and the listing rarely says so. One safety note applies throughout: after any reset, volume settings often return to a default that can be louder than the level in use beforehand, so it is worth turning the volume down before reconnecting.
