IP Ratings for Earbuds: IPX4 Versus IPX7 and What No Rating Covers

The word waterproof means almost nothing on its own. The IP code means something, and the gap between IPX4 and IPX7 is larger than it looks.

The word waterproof appears on a large share of earbud listings, and it means almost nothing on its own. The rating that means something is the IP code, and the difference between IPX4 and IPX7 is the difference between surviving sweat and surviving being dropped in a sink. Reading the code takes ten seconds and prevents a specific and expensive mistake.

How to read an IP code

An IP code has two digits. The first covers solid ingress, mostly dust, and the second covers water. Where a manufacturer has only tested for water, the first digit is replaced with an X, which is why so many earbuds are rated IPX4 or IPX7 rather than IP54 or IP67. The X is not a weakness. It means the dust test was not performed or not published.

The water digit is a ladder, and the useful rungs for earbuds are these. IPX4 covers splashing from any direction, which in practice means sweat and light rain. IPX5 covers a low pressure water jet. IPX6 covers a stronger jet. IPX7 covers immersion in one meter of fresh water for thirty minutes. IPX8 covers immersion deeper or longer than IPX7 under conditions the manufacturer specifies, which means IPX8 is only as meaningful as the conditions attached to it.

Crucially, the ladder is not strictly cumulative. A product tested to IPX7 has not necessarily been tested against a pressurized jet, because immersion and jets are different tests. Manufacturers that want to claim both usually publish both.

IPX4 is not waterproof, and the distinction matters

Beats publishes IPX4 for the Powerbeats Pro 2. That is a sweat and splash rating, which is the correct rating for a gym earbud and entirely adequate for running in rain. It is not an immersion rating. A pair rated IPX4 that goes through a wash cycle or into a pool is not covered, and describing that product as waterproof in a review would be actively misleading.

The higher end of the ladder does appear in this catalog. Anker publishes IP68 for the Soundcore Sport X20, and JBL publishes IP68 for the Endurance Peak 3, both of which include a dust digit as well. JLab publishes IP55 for the Go Sport+, which is a jet rating rather than an immersion rating. TOZO publishes IPX8 for the TOZO T6 and IPX5 for the TOZO A1 Mini. Those two products sit four rungs apart and both get described as waterproof in general marketing, which is exactly the problem.

The dust digit is worth more than it looks

Where a first digit is published, a 5 means dust protected and a 6 means dust tight. For earbuds that live in a gym bag, a pocket or a beach towel, that digit is arguably more useful than the water digit, because fine grit is what works its way into a charging contact and into the seam around a driver. It is also the digit most often left as an X, since testing for it costs money and does not sell as well as the word waterproof. When a product publishes IP68 rather than IPX8, the manufacturer has done more work and is telling a buyer more.

When the code on the listing is not a real code

A recurring pattern in this catalog is a listing that prints IP7. There is no such rating. An IP code needs two characters after the letters, so a water only claim should read IPX7. The listings for the Jxrev J51 and the DCBCODGAL F9 both use IP7 in the product title.

The charitable reading is a typographical error for IPX7. The cautious reading is that the seller has not published a verified rating at all. Either way, an unrecognizable code should be treated as no code. The same applies to a specification field that simply reads Waterproof with no number attached, which is how a large share of this catalog is populated. That field is a category label, not a test result.

What no IP rating covers, at any level

Even a genuine IPX7 or IP68 rating has hard boundaries that listings never mention.

  • Seawater. IP testing uses fresh water. Salt is corrosive and conductive, and it stays behind after the water evaporates. No IP rating is a permission slip for the ocean.
  • Chlorinated and soapy water. Pool chemistry and shower products attack seals and adhesives in ways plain water does not.
  • High pressure water. A shower head at close range, and certainly a hose, exceeds what most immersion ratings were tested against.
  • Hot water and steam. Temperature changes make the internal air expand and contract, which draws moisture past seals. Saunas and hot showers are worse for electronics than cold water.
  • The charging case. The rating is almost always for the buds only. Cases are rarely rated at all, and the case is the part with an open port on it.

There is one more limitation that no listing states plainly. IP ratings are measured on a new unit. Gaskets compress, adhesives age, and grit at the seam does the rest, so a rating describes the product on day one rather than on day 400. A two year old pair rated IPX7 should be treated as considerably less protected than the number suggests.

Products that publish no rating, and products that publish none deliberately

Plenty of good headphones have no water rating and do not need one. Sony records the WH-1000XM4 as not water resistant, and the listing for the Amazon Basics USB-C wired earbuds says the same. Both are honest disclosures rather than omissions, and both products are aimed at desks, commutes and flights rather than workouts.

Open-ear and bone conduction designs are a separate case, because they usually have fewer openings into the ear and are frequently marketed for outdoor use. The listing for the PSIER X11 bone conduction headphones publishes IPX6, which is a jet rating rather than an immersion rating, and the product is marketed for hiking and cycling. Anyone considering it for cycling should also be aware that any headphone changes what is audible on the road and that local law may restrict headphone use near traffic.

Matching the rating to the actual use

Most buyers need less than they think. IPX4 covers gym sweat and rain, which is what the overwhelming majority of workouts involve. IPX5 and IPX6 add tolerance for a rinse under a tap, which is genuinely useful for earbuds that spend time in a sweaty ear. IPX7 and IP68 add survival of an accidental drop into water, which is a real scenario for anyone who has washed a pair by mistake.

What none of them add is a reason to swim in them, and what none of them survive is neglect. Rinsing sweat off with fresh water after a workout and drying the buds before they go back in the case extends the life of any of these products more than two extra rungs on the ladder ever will. That habit, plus reading the actual code rather than the adjective, covers almost everything that goes wrong. It is worth applying to the whole earbud headphones catalog before treating any product as pool ready.
