How to Read an Earbud Listing When the Specification Fields Are Wrong

Earbud spec tables are seller entered and often wrong. How to read scientific notation, impossible battery figures and placeholder tokens on audio listings.

The specification table near the bottom of an audio listing looks like the trustworthy part of the page. It is laid out like a datasheet, it uses consistent field names, and it sits below the marketing copy as though it were the correction to it. On wireless audio, that table is frequently the least reliable text on the page. It is filled in by the seller, it is not audited, and the same field name carries different units, different meanings, and sometimes values that no physical product could produce.

This is not a rare failure. Across the wireless audio catalog listed here, the pattern repeats often enough that it is worth learning to read around. What follows is drawn from the published specification fields of products listed on this site, named so you can check them yourself.

Numbers that arrive in scientific notation

The clearest sign that a spec table has passed through a spreadsheet is a value written as 1E+1 instead of 10. The Soundcore P30i listing manages three of them at once: charging time recorded as 1E+1 minutes, battery life as 1E+1 hours, and driver size as 1E+1 millimeters. Each one means ten. None of them says so in a form a reader would scan for.

It affects established brands too. The Corsair HS70 Pro headset listing gives its driver size as 5E+1 millimeters, which is the 50 mm driver the marketing copy describes in plain language two paragraphs above. Around forty values across this catalog are stored this way, most often in the Bluetooth range field, where 1E+1 Meters and 3E+1 Feet are both common. The number is usually correct. The formatting is what fails.

Battery fields that cannot be right

Battery is where spec tables break down completely. The TOZO T10 listing records battery life as 30,000 hours. That is roughly three and a half years of continuous playback from a pair of earbuds. The TOZO T6 listing gives 20,000 hours in the same field while separately recording a 45 hour case total, and the two numbers were clearly never meant to sit next to each other. A second failure mode is subtler and easier to miss: the charging time field and the battery life field holding the same number. The ASTRO A20 Gen 2 listing gives 15 hours for both. The TOZO HT2 headphone listing gives 60 hours for both. Neither product takes as long to charge as it takes to run down. What has almost certainly happened is that the headline playtime figure was pasted into two fields, and only one of them was the right home for it.

Frequency fields holding the radio band

Frequency response should describe the range of audible tones a driver reproduces, conventionally something close to 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. On the TOZO OpenBuds listing, the frequency response field reads 2.4 GHz. That is the Bluetooth radio band, not an audio range, and roughly ten listings in this catalog have the same substitution. Elsewhere the units drift: one Bose over-ear listing records 2400 KHz, and the TOZO T10 entry above states 20 to 2000 khz.

Thirty-nine listings here give frequency response as a single figure, “20 KHz”, with no lower bound at all. A single number is not a range, and a range without a tolerance figure tells you very little about how a driver actually behaves. Treat the field as decorative unless the listing pairs it with something measurable.

Driver sizes with the wrong unit attached

Driver diameter is one of the few audio specifications that is straightforward to state, and listings still get it wrong. One earbud listing in this catalog records its audio driver size as 10 Meters. It means 10 mm. The unit dropdown was set incorrectly and nothing caught it.

Driver size is also over-read by shoppers. A larger driver moves more air, but enclosure design, tuning, and above all the seal in your ear canal decide what you hear. A 13 mm driver in a bud that does not seal will sound thinner than a 6 mm driver that does.

Fields inherited from entirely different product categories

Amazon’s specification schema is shared across departments, and audio listings routinely carry fields that belong to computers or toys. The ASTRO A20 listing referenced above records a controller type of “Wireless Controller, Keyboard/Mouse”. Twenty-nine listings in this audio catalog carry a “Number of USB 2 Ports” field. Twenty-eight carry a “Cartoon Character” field. None of these describe the product. They are schema residue, and they should be ignored rather than interpreted.

Placeholder text that was never replaced

Two listings here publish a frequency range that openly admits it was guessed. The Bowers and Wilkins Pi8 listing states “[Inferred] Typically 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz”. The Soundcore Q20i headphone listing states “[IMPLIED] 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz”. The bracketed token is a data pipeline placeholder that was supposed to be filled in with a real figure. It is useful in one respect: it tells you plainly that the number is not a measurement.

A quieter version of the same problem is the invisible character. Several hundred field values across this catalog begin with a left to right mark, an invisible formatting character that survives copy and paste. It is why a model number can look identical to another and still fail an exact search.

When the components field holds advertising

The “Included Components” field is supposed to list what ships in the box. On the Soundcore A3949 listing, it instead holds a paragraph of pairing instructions, and that paragraph refers to a differently named model in the same product family. The Q20i listing above fills the same field with the words “soundcore Q20i headphone”, which tells you nothing about cables, tips, or a carry pouch.

When the components field is prose, the box contents are unpublished. Say that to yourself rather than assuming the usual accessories are present.

A reading order that survives bad data

Work through a listing in this sequence and most of the noise stops mattering.

  • Read the manufacturer’s feature bullets first. They are written by the brand and are usually more internally consistent than the table.
  • When the bullets and the table disagree, note both and treat the specification as unconfirmed rather than picking the number you prefer.
  • Separate runtime per charge from total runtime including the case. Listings routinely quote only the combined figure.
  • Treat a bare number with no unit, or a unit that makes no sense, as missing information.
  • Do not read the Bluetooth version as a sound quality rating. One listing in this catalog records its version as simply “4”, and a higher number would not have made it sound better.
  • If a feature is not mentioned anywhere in the listing, assume it is absent. Multipoint pairing, transparency mode, wear detection, and app support are all commonly omitted rather than commonly implied.

What to confirm before you commit

Three things are worth verifying on the manufacturer’s own site before buying: the runtime split between buds and case, the water resistance code if the listing only says “waterproof”, and the Bluetooth codecs supported, because a codec only works when your phone supports it too. Everything else on a spec table can be wrong without changing whether the product suits you.
