Bluetooth version numbers appear on more headphone listings than any other technical specification. Across the 384 products catalogued on this site, 159 name Bluetooth 5.3, 66 name 5.4, 23 name 5.0, 16 name 5.2 and 4 name 5.1. The number is printed in large type on packaging, repeated in product titles and used as a shorthand for quality. It is not one.
The core specification governs how radios discover each other, how they schedule packets, how they manage power and what new transport layers exist. It says almost nothing about how music sounds, because stereo audio over Bluetooth still travels on a profile that has been stable for many years, carried by a codec chosen separately. A 5.4 radio and a 5.0 radio running the same codec into the same driver produce the same stream.
What each version actually introduced
Bluetooth 5.0 arrived in 2016 and its headline changes all belong to the low energy side of the standard: roughly double the low energy data rate, a substantially longer low energy range option, and larger advertising packets. Classic audio, the part that carries stereo music to headphones, was untouched. This matters because 5.0 is still a perfectly current audio radio. The Sony WH-1000XM4 is listed at Bluetooth 5.0 and carries LDAC, which is a higher bitrate audio path than most 5.4 earbuds on the market can negotiate.
Bluetooth 5.1 added direction finding, letting a receiver estimate the angle a signal arrived from. That underpins item trackers and indoor positioning. It also introduced caching improvements that shorten reconnection. For a set of earbuds, 5.1 is functionally 5.0 with a slightly faster handshake. The SoundPEATS Free2 Classic is one of the small number of listings here at that version.
Bluetooth 5.2 is the consequential one for audio. It introduced the low energy isochronous channels, enhanced attribute protocol and low energy power control that together form the foundation of LE Audio, along with the LC3 codec. LE Audio is a genuinely new audio transport: lower power at comparable quality, native support for sending independent streams to each earbud, and the broadcast capability marketed as Auracast. The Soundcore Space A40 is listed at 5.2. Crucially, a 5.2 chip does not mean LE Audio is implemented. The specification made it possible; the manufacturer decides whether to build it, and the phone has to support it too.
Bluetooth 5.3 refined rather than added. Connection subrating lets a link shift between high and low duty cycle without renegotiating, channel classification improved how devices avoid congested parts of the band, and periodic advertising gained efficiency. The practical effect is modestly better power behavior and modestly better resilience in crowded radio environments. It is the version stamped on the largest group of products here, including the TOZO T10 and the TOZO T6, both of which put the version in the product name itself.
Bluetooth 5.4 added periodic advertising with responses, encrypted advertising data and a security levels characteristic. Those features were designed with electronic shelf labels and large sensor deployments in mind. For a pair of earbuds they change nothing an owner will notice. Listings such as the Btootos A90 Pro, the Qecnato T12 and the Byobyc T7 all lead with 5.4, which is accurate as a component fact and meaningless as an audio argument.
The three things people expect a higher version to fix
Sound quality
Version does not set audio quality. The codec does, and the codec has to be supported at both ends. This is why a 5.4 earbud that negotiates only SBC will be outperformed on raw bitrate by a 5.0 headphone negotiating LDAC or aptX. Range
Range is set by transmit power class, receiver sensitivity, antenna design and the physical environment, not by version number. Most earbuds use a low power class specified around ten meters in open air. A 5.4 earbud and a 5.0 earbud in the same power class have the same nominal reach. The long range mode that arrived with 5.0 applies to low energy connections, not to the classic audio link carrying music.
Battery life
Here the version does contribute, but indirectly and modestly. Power control in 5.2 and subrating in 5.3 let a radio spend less energy holding a link. That gain is small next to battery cell size, noise cancelling circuitry and listening volume, all of which dominate real runtime. A quoted playtime figure almost always assumes moderate volume with noise cancelling switched off, and manufacturers rarely say so.
Where the version genuinely matters
Three cases justify caring. If a listener wants Auracast broadcast audio, or wants LE Audio at all, a 5.2 or later radio is a prerequisite on both the phone and the earbud, and the manufacturer must have implemented it. If a listener works in a dense radio environment with many competing 2.4 GHz devices, 5.3 channel handling can help marginally. And if the earbuds must last a full working day on a small cell, the newer power management earns a little of its keep.
Outside those cases the version number is a manufacturing date stamp. It is more useful for telling how recently a chipset was selected than for predicting anything about the listening experience. On the Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro, as with most manufacturer ecosystems, the features that change daily use come from the companion app and the phone pairing, not from the digit after the decimal point.
Reading a listing without being misled
A version number with no codec named tells you nothing about audio. A version number with no transmit power class tells you nothing about range. A version number with no separate bud runtime and case runtime tells you nothing about battery. When the specification stops at the version, the honest conclusion is that the important details were not published, and the questions to ask a seller are which codecs the product negotiates, how long a single charge of the buds lasts with noise cancelling active, and whether the product supports two host devices at once.
Comparing across form factors makes the point clearly. The over-ear models in the wireless headphones section often carry older radio versions with more capable codecs and much larger batteries, while the newest version numbers cluster on compact in-ear models in the earbud headphones section. Sorting by version number would rank those two groups in exactly the wrong order for a listener who cares about how the music arrives.
Whatever the version, closed and noise cancelling designs reduce awareness of surroundings, and no radio specification changes that. Volume discipline matters more than any number on the box: prolonged listening at high levels damages hearing permanently, and a good seal means a lower volume setting delivers the same perceived loudness.
