JBL Tune Flex Review: A Seller Bundle With gSport Case, IPX4 and Two Battery Figures

  • This is a seller assembled bundle pairing JBL Tune Flex earbuds with a third party gSport carrying case, and the manufacturer description field on the listing is empty.
  • Battery is stated in full both ways: 8 hours in the buds plus 24 in the case with cancellation off, and 6 hours plus 18 with cancellation on.
  • Rated IPX4, which is splashes and sweat only. The bullet’s claim about handling a downpour goes beyond what that code certifies.
  • No Bluetooth version, no codec and no ear tip count are published anywhere on the listing.
  • The age range field says “Adult, Kid” but no volume limit is stated, so there is nothing here to rely on for a child’s listening.

Description

Read the title of this listing carefully, because it is not the ordinary JBL product page. It reads “JBL Tune Flex Noise Cancelling True Wireless Earbud Bundle with gSport Case (Black).” This is a seller assembled bundle: a pair of JBL earbuds packed together with a third party carrying case from gSport. That has consequences. The manufacturer description field on this listing is completely empty, so the only text available is the bundle seller’s bullet list, and it is thinner than JBL’s own. Anyone comparing this against the standalone product should read our review of the standard JBL Tune Flex listing alongside this one.

Who this suits

The Tune Flex is a stick style true wireless earbud with active noise cancellation, a charging case and touch controls. The seller lists compatible devices as tablets, personal computers, laptops and smartphones, and records the age range as “Adult, Kid.” That last field matters more than it looks, and we come back to it below.

The extra item in this bundle is a soft lined zip case with a mesh pocket. It is a bag for the charging case, not a second charger and not an audio component. If you already own a pouch, the bundle adds nothing to the sound and nothing to the battery. If you travel with the buds loose in a backpack, it is a genuine if modest convenience.

Connection: the largest gap in this listing

No Bluetooth version is published. Not in the title, not in the bullets, not in the specification table. The only connection figure is a 10 meter range, which is the standard figure for this class of radio and assumes clear line of sight. For a product sold in 2023, the absence of a version number is a straightforward omission by the bundle seller rather than a fault in the hardware, but it is what the buyer has to work with.

No codec is named either. There is no mention of SBC, AAC, aptX or anything else, and there is no high resolution claim on this listing, which is the correct outcome given that nothing would support one. If you need a specific codec for a specific phone, this listing cannot answer the question and you should confirm with JBL directly.

Ambient modes

Two awareness features are named and both are useful. Ambient Aware keeps music playing while letting outside sound through, and TalkThru drops the music level so a short conversation does not require pulling a bud out. Those are the features that matter most day to day on a sealed bud, and it is worth noting that the seller names them plainly. Multipoint pairing to two devices at once is not mentioned anywhere, and neither is wear detection, so do not assume either is present.

Battery: both figures published, which is rare

This listing does something most in this catalog do not, and it deserves credit for it. The bullet reads: “UP TO 32 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE – Never miss a beat with 32 (8+24) hours of battery life or 6 hours plus 18 hours in the case when noise cancelling is engaged.”

That is a complete picture. With cancellation switched off you get eight hours in the ear and twenty four more from the case. With cancellation running you get six hours in the ear and eighteen more from the case, for twenty four total. Both figures are best case numbers quoted at moderate volume, and a cell that is two years old will not hit them, but the split between bud runtime and case reserve is exactly what a listing should publish and almost never does.

One caution on the specification table, which records “Battery Life: 32 Hours.” Thirty two hours is the total including the case, not the bud runtime. Read alone, that field overstates what a single charge delivers by a factor of four.

Fit, controls and the water rating

The bullet states the rating plainly: “IPX4 water resistance and sweat proofing.” IPX4 covers splashing from any direction. It is not an immersion rating, it does not cover a shower, and the X in the first position means no dust rating has been assigned at all. The bullet goes on to claim there is not “a workout or downpour the Tune Flex cant handle,” which oversells the code it just quoted. A sustained downpour is beyond what IPX4 certifies. The separate specification field says only “Water Resistant,” with no code attached, which is a word rather than a rating. No IP rating covers seawater or pressurized water, and seals degrade as the product ages.

On fit, the listing does not say how many ear tip sizes are supplied, which is a real gap on a sealed bud. The tip is what decides both the bass you hear and how much outside noise gets blocked, so a buyer with unusually small or large ear canals has no way to judge this from the page. The impedance is given as 32 ohms and no driver size is published. Controls are touch, which is convenient in a coat pocket and less reliable under a hat.

The dimensions and weight on this listing describe the bundle carton and not the product: 8 by 6 by 5 inches at 10.5 ounces. No bud weight is published.

The age range field, and a hearing note

The specification table records the age range as “Adult, Kid.” Nothing else on this listing is aimed at children, and critically, no volume limit is published anywhere. If you are buying earbuds for a child, a stated volume limit is the specification to look for, and even then a limit is only meaningful if the child cannot switch it off in the companion app or by pairing to a different device. This listing states no limit, so it offers nothing to rely on, and we are not going to describe any product here as safe for a child’s hearing. Keep listening levels low enough that a normal speaking voice nearby is still audible, and take breaks.

What the numbers say, and the alternatives

Customer feedback on this bundle sits at 3.9 out of 5 from just 32 ratings, which is a small sample and should not carry much weight either way. The sales rank is given as 199,009th in Electronics and 9,261st in the earbud and in-ear headphone group, which is low, and that is normal for a bundle listing competing against the manufacturer’s own page. The model number is recorded as GSPORT-TUNEFLEX-BLACK and the date first available as April 2023.

If cancellation is not essential, JBL’s cheaper sealed bud publishes a longer combined figure and an IP54 rating, covered in our JBL Vibe Buds review. The closest sibling with cancellation is covered in our JBL Tune Buds review, and the step up in our JBL Live Free 2 review. For side by side comparison across brands, start from the true wireless earbud listings or the broader in-ear headphone listings.

Who should buy it and who should not

Buy this bundle if you want the Tune Flex and you also want a protective pouch in the same order, and if six hours of bud runtime with cancellation running covers your typical session. Do not buy it expecting a stated Bluetooth version or a named codec, because neither is published. Do not read IPX4 as shower proof. And if this is intended for a child, look for a product that publishes a volume limit, because this one does not.
